Operation Clean Out My Closet (Day 30)

The last day!  I made it! I really wanted to go out with a bang, but after going almost an entire month without repeating clothes or wearing old-time favorites, I am totally spent.  So, I’ll admit that today’s outfit is a tad uninspired.

The sweater I am wearing today is from Banana Republic, circa 2007.  It’s size XS. So, it’s an oldie for sure.  I haven’t worn it since 2013. Probably because of these bell sleeves. They are CRAZY! Otherwise, I really like the light green tone of this sweater, and it’s very soft.

The jeans I have on are a pair of bootcut jeans from Banana Republic (size 25P) hat I bought in 2015.  I have another pair of bootcut jeans in a lighter wash from Banana Republic that I really love, and bought these thinking that they would fit exactly as the other ones do.  I was wrong.  For some reason, even though they are the same size and cut, these are way bigger.  And thus, I barely ever wear these.  I haven’t worn them since last year because they are too roomy to wear tucked into boots and they are too long to wear with flats.  As it is, they were too long for the beige booties I wore with them.  Pity.

BUT WILL SHE KEEP IT?  No.  I probably will get rid of the jeans since I don’t like the way they fit, and definitely will chuck the sweater.  I don’t like these sleeves on this sweater and felt silly all day wearing these, even though I worked from home all day and only left the house to take my son to a doctor appointment.

So, there you have it folks.  30 days of wearing things that were either brand new but had never been worn, or old clothes that hadn’t been worn for so long that I had nearly forgotten about them.  I think this challenge, for all the annoyance it caused me over the last 30 days, was a real success!  My closet looks so much better after going through it as over the course of the challenge, and I still have to go through my drawers and Spring/Summer wardrobe that I have in my storage room in the basement.  But I have come a long way and have two 13-gallon garbage bags full of clothes to give away to someone who will give them a good home, and will appreciate them more than I have/will!

For anyone struggling with a closet that looks like a hot mess, I highly recommend taking on this 30-day challenge.  If you’re like me, you have too may things that you know you’ll never wear, and it’s probably time to sh*t or get off the pot!  You’ll be happy you did.

Operation Clean Out My Closet (Day 29)

Next to last day of this closet clean-out challenge. Yesssss! But I’ll tell you what, it would have been a lot easier to get dressed today of this weather wasn’t so confused. It was 75 degrees a few days ago and now it’s cold, raining, and going to snow. Fickle a$$ weather!!

Anywho, I’m looking a little rougher than usual today because I went out with the hubs for dinner last night without the kids, and probably had one vodka soda too many. And then add to that, I took my oldest with me to the indoor pool in my hood so that I could help him work on a few things I saw from his swim meet yesterday.  It’s funny – my brain thinks this shoddy old body can still hang in the pool (I swam competitively for 6 years as a kid) but my body begs to differ. So, I’m tired and sore and my eyes are red and burning (wearing my son’s goggles didn’t help!), and feel like I got slapped around. I’m probably gonna be all kinds of messed up tomorrow when the soreness really kicks in. But anywho, here’s what I found to wear today. This navy blue argyle sweater is one that I bought from Target in 2011 or 2012. I’ve worn it only once, and that was probably 3 years ago. I’m not sure why I don’t wear this in the Fall and Winter – I could totally wear this in the office or when out and about on the weekends, but this is another thing in the closet that fell victim to my forgetting that I even owned it! This is a huge problem for me and it has to stop. I shouldn’t own so many clothes that I don’t even know what I have anymore!

I’m wearing this sweater with a pair of green skinny cords from Loft. I figured this would look good together, as green and blue are analogous colors on the color wheel. And since it’s cold outside, a pair of brown booties.

BUT WILL SHE KEEP IT? Yes. This is s nice sweater that I could probably get a lot of use out of, if I’d only put it somewhere where I’d remember it’s there!
That’s all folks. I need to go get two Aleve and an ice pack!

Operation Clean Out My Closet (Day 28)

It’s a rainy day and I’ve been up since way-too-early-on-a-Satuday because my oldest two kids had a swim meet this morning. Needless to say I didn’t have much fashion inspiration ting on today. Especially since I had to (well wanted to) wear spirit wear to the meet. So, I didn’t really have much time to pick something out when I got home from the swim meet.  I literally had to scramble to put together an outfit meeting the challenge’s parameters.  But here goes.    I found this teal top from H&M in my casual top drawer.  I don’t know when I bought this. Maybe 2009 or 2010?  I’m not sure, but I haven’t worn this top in 2 years. I used to really like it, but I had forgotten about his top to be honest.

I am wearing a pair of dark blue denim skinny jeans from Nordstrom Rack, which I bight a few years ago, and a pair of teal striped ballet flats by Lesportsac that I bought in 2011 or 2012 from DSW. I haven’t worn these flats in at least 2 years. I forgot I had these, as well. And I finished this outfit off with a green and brown bead necklace.  Sorry, but it’s the best I could do so late in the day.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend everyone!

Operation Clean Out My Closet (Day 27)

I’m a little slow posting today, but in my defense my hubby too me out to lunch for an early birthday celebration before the kids got home from school, and Mexican mojitos were involved.

So yeah, I am a little behind.  And didn’t even bother taking any pics until after a few mojitos and very late in the afternoon, so I’m looking pretty crazy right now. But here’s what I wore today.

I picked out a bright yellow striped tank from Loft, which I think I bought in 2013. I haven’t worn this since last spring, so I figured it it sorta counted for the challenge.  And I paired the tank with a cardigan, also from Loft around the same time.  I haven’t worn this cardigan in a few years, so this definitely counts toward the challenge. I love these bright yellows, they’re just so cute for Spring and make me happy.

I’m wearing J.Crew stretch skinny jeans, a pair of floral Mossimo ballet flats from Target, and a multi-colored beaded necklace from Charming Charlie.

BUT WILL SHE KEEP IT? Absolutely. These are great colors

And now, I am off to do some more celebrating.

Operation Clean Out My Closet (Day 26)

Happy St. Patrick’s Day ♣!

So, getting dressed today was somewhat easy because I knew I wanted to wear green, and I only have a few green pieces in my work wardrobe. Which is so weird because green is my second favorite color next to blue. But for some reason, I simply don’t buy a lot of green for any occasion much less going into the office.  I basically had to choose between two green dresses, one of which I really like but it’s a wrap dress. I used to seriously love wrap dresses and before I birthed 4 kids and had something in the chesticle region, wrap dresses looked really good on me. They were super flattering and I bought them often. But fast forward to the current body situation and wrap dresses are not so flattering. I just wasn’t ready to deal with trying on s wrap dress this morning, so I settled on this jade green (I think that’s what it’s called) sheath dress.

This is a Mossimo sheath dress (size 2) from Target. I’m going to guess I bought this dress in 2010, but I honestly don’t know when I bought it. I wore this dress to my oldest’s pre-K “graduation” so I know I had this dress in 2012.

I even have a picture from this day to prove it! That’s my mom on the left! Isn’t she cute?

What I am sure about, however, is that I last wore this dress in 2013 because the dry cleaner’s tag is still stapled to the tag and it’s still hanging on the wire hanger from the dry cleaners. That seems to be a common theme over the last 3 weeks!

So, the dress fits okay. It’s a little big, but most things are on me. It has pockets, though, and dresses that have pockets are generally A-OK in my book. I threw on my beige wide belt from Banana Republic to give my waist little definition. I decided to wear a brown leopard print cardigan that I bought from Old Navy maybe in 2010. I really don’t know when I bought this either but I haven’t worn it in 2 years.

The brown polka dot pumps with teal faux leather trim are Steven Madden. And to finish off the outfit, I put on a brown and green bauble necklace that I found in my nightstand drawer last night. I think this is from Charming Charlie, but I’m. It 100% sure, but I don’t think I’ve worn it before. I didn’t even know I had it!  And I’m wearing multicolored bracelet from Cameroon.

BUT WILL SHE KEEP IT?  Yes.  I may just want to see if I can have it taken in a tad.  But a little room in clothes isn’t a bad thing.

I hope everyone has a safe and happy St. Paddy’s!

Operation Clean Out My Closet (Day 25)

Only 5 more days of this challenge!  Woo hoo!  I’ll tell you what, my inspiration is running really low guys.  It’s harder every day to come up with something to wear.  This challenge is really taking its toll, but I know I will have a much more manageable closet situation in a few more days.

It’s partly sunny today and it’s supposed to be 75 degrees or so, so I really didn’t want to wear jeans today.  Plus, the only casual jeans or pants that I haven’t already worn as part of this challenge and/or haven’t already been eliminated from my wardrobe, are bootcut jeans.  I still like bootcut jeans, don’t get me wrong, but sometimes they feel a little dated, too.  I have an Old Navy denim mini skirt from maybe 2005 that I decided would be the winner today.

Yeah, it’s short, but what the heck?  I shaved my legs, so I’m not in danger of scaring anyone by wearing a skirt!  And since  I haven’t worn this skirt in several years, I needed to see how ridiculous it looked (or felt) wearing a mini skirt in order to make an informed decision about whether to keep this old skirt. And honestly, I didn’t feel too silly when I put it on, so I that’s a good sign.

I found this silver shimmery Old Navy sweater from 2013 in the bottom of a pile of clothes that I keep intending to go through.  I don’t think I have worn this sweater in over a year, so it’s high time to put in back into the rotation.  It’s lightweight enough to wear in the Spring, but can also be worn in the winter.  I can wear it at work and at play, so it’s pretty versatile.

I threw on a silver and bronze necklace from H&M that I bought for $3 and a pair of silver sequined loafers to complete the look.

BUT WILL SHE KEEP IT? Yes.  As long as my legs still look decent, and don’t have that saggy old lady knee action (it’s getting close, trust me) I don’t mind busting out a mini skirt every now and again.  And the sweater is a keeper, I just need to put it in a more prominent place in my closet so I don’t lose track of it again.

Have a good one!

Operation Clean Out My Closet (Day 24)

Sigh.  Three outfit changes before I decided on an outfit today.  I guess it could be worse, but the dreary chilly and wet day is really putting a damper on my mood (and ability to put together an outfit that looks semi-decent). And late winter humidity means super frizzy hair, so I am just not a happy camper right now.
I was looking through a pile of clean clothes that need to be hung up/folded/put away (yeah, laundry is my kryptonite – I can’t ever seem to keep on top of it because I am doing laundry for 6; my stuff is ALWAYS the last to be dealt with) and found this cranberry top from Old Navy, which my mom bought me for Christmas back in 2013.  I wore this top a few times during the summer 2014 after I lost the baby weight, but haven’t worn it since.  I forgot I had it to be honest. It’s a cute print that doesn’t overwhelm my frame, and works with pants and shorts.  But, it’s sheer, so it definitely needs a tank underneath.  Today I wore a cranberry tank, also from Old Navy.  I’m guessing my mom bought that, as well.  The pants are a pair of plum skinny cords from Loft, which I have blogged about multiple times.  I have 4 pairs of these and really, really, truly love them.  And since it’s chilly, I threw on my beige booties and a light pink beaded necklace that I found at H&M for $5, and called it a wrap.

BUT WILL SHE KEEP IT? Yes.  It’s a cute top, and I don’t have a lot of this color in my wardrobe.

Operation Clean Out My Closet (Day 23)

I am coming up on the home stretch of my 30 day challenge to start wearing things that I’ve never worn so that I can finally clean out my hot mess of a closet. It’s really make or break time, so I’m really going to step things up a notch in this final week!

Today, I wore a grey and black Calvin Klein belted shift dress (size 2) that I bought from Ross back in 2013 that I’ve never worn.  I bought this dress right before I found out I was unexpectedly pregnant with baby #4, like literally 2 days before I realized “crap, I’m pregnant again. WTF happened?”  Yes, I already had done the whole baby thing 3 times before and was still very confused that I was pregnant again at age 36!  But I digress.  Once I found out I had taken on another passenger on the baby making express, there wasn’t really any point in wearing this dress.  The thought of wearing anything with a belt around my expanding midsection was really unappealing.  And then after I returned to work from maternity leave, I couldn’t really wear this dress because I was pumping 3 times during the course of the day in the office, and this dress was simply too much trouble in that department. Sorry for the TMI folks.

Anywho, I figured it was high time to see if this never-been-worn dress was worth my keeping the last 2.5 years.  It has a cute chevron print and is really a classic dress for a career gal.  And it has pockets – I LOVE dresses that have pockets!

But the dress is a tad big.  Sigh.  I should note that the dress comes with a cropped jacket, but cropped jackets are not my thing.  AT ALL.  They look way too matronly, and the last thing I want is to look like a granny before I even hit my 40s!  So, I put on a fuchsia cropped cardigan from New York & Co. that my mom bought for me, thinking it would brighten up the dress. I also put on a silver-toned necklace and chandelier earrings to give the outfit a little extra oomph, and finished it of with a pair of black heels (which I will change when I get to the office, because the shoes I really want to wear are under my desk)!

BUT WILL SHE KEEP IT? Maybe.  The dress is definitely big on me, but maybe I can get it hemmed.  And see if they can take it in a tad. I think it’s good to have a few classic/timeless work dresses in your wardrobe, and with a few alterations, I think this dress will work nicely.  Thoughts? Is it too much trouble to be worth it?

Operation Clean Out My Closet (Day 22)

I am sooo tired today. Damn you Daylight Saving Time!  And on top of that, my son’s semifinal soccer match was at 10:30 am, so I had an early wake up call to make sure he ate breakfast and “got his mind right” for the game. According to the hubs, he was a #beast this morning, too! He kept the opponent from scoring the tying goal and was a rock star on defense the entire game.  I am so proud of him!

After taking the younger 3 kids to a birthday party while the morning soccer match was going on, once I had heard they won their game and made it to the finals, I decided there was no way I’d miss the championship game. I’m typing this post as I  sit here in the rain waiting for halftime to end.

Anyway, getting dressed today was a breeze. I wanted to see if I could finally wear a pair of  brown leggings that my mom bought me from New York & Co 2 or 3 years ago. The problem with these is that I waited a year before I actually tried to wear them, and when I did, that sticker that they put on clothes telling you the size was totally stuck on left leg of the leggings. I couldn’t get it off to save my life. But I was able to remove most of the glue from that sticker and gave these pants a chance. I wore them with a pink sequin sweater I bought on sale from Ann Taylor. Since the sweater is very sheer, I put on a white H&M tank underneath.  I put on my beige wide belt from Banana Republic and Sam Edelman beige booties and was out the door.

Getting back to the kid’s soccer match, I had to go home to change first because I was overdressed for a soccer match, especially with the rain and everything. So I put on this casual outfit, which is more appropriate to cheer the team to victory.

Just a casual outfit made up of Old Navy Sweetheart jeans from 2013 that I haven’t worn since 2015 because I’ve been on a skinny jeans kick. I’m also wearing the same H&M tank top, and a beige open-front light beige cardigan that I bought in 2015 from Nordstrom Rack but have never warn, and a pair of white and silver sneakers that my mom bought for me in 2014 that I’ve never worn. I’m pretty impressed that I put together two outfits that met the challenge, even while trying the keep the crazy kiddos from acting a fool.

Oh, and the kid’s team WON their championship game in penalty kicks. Awesome job, guys!

#25
BUT WILL SHE KEEP IT? Yes. The brown leggings are cute, fit pretty well, and now that the sticker glue is gone, these can fit right into the rotation!

Operation Clean Out My Closet (Day 21)

My oldest son has a soccer tournament all weekend, and I got “stuck” hanging out with the other 3 kids while the hubs covers soccer. And when you get to hang out with the crazy crew by yourself, getting dressed can be a challenge to say the least. I’m lucky I was even able to brush my teeth! So, I literally had to throw anything on and hope for the best!I bought this oversized grey leopard print sweater from H&M (size XS) in 2015, but I’ve never worn it until today.  I didn’t try this on when I bought it (I rarely try anything on) and I definitely should have. I know it’s supposed to be oversized, but I’m not sure if like how long it is in the back.
This sweater is also way longer in the back than in the front. I feel like I’m wearing a sack and I’m just not sure I can pull this look off. What do you think?

Anyway, since it’s an overcast day in the high 50s, I threw on a pair of thick black leggings that I found at Target in 2014 right after I had a baby. I needed to keep all the baby pudge in place and these leggings are really slimming. But I haven’t worn these since right after I had the baby, so it was time to put these back into the rotation. I’ll tell you what, these leggings are great. They really do suck everything in. And the same teal ballet flats finished off the outfit.

BUT WILL SHE KEEP IT? I think so. Even though the sweater is a but large, it’s comfy and I love the print. And the leggings are a no brainier. They stay!
(Oh and my son’s team won their first game and tied the second game. And he played #likeaboss.)
